Gyrotoner Exercise
The fundamentals of the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® consists of a totally new exercise system, using GYROKINESIS® principles as the basis to exercise the musculature while mobilizing and articulating the joints.

The uniqueness of the System is that it simultaneously stretches and strengthens the body with minimal effort, while increasing range of motion and developing coordination.

The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® was specially conceived regarding key principles of gymnastics, swimming, ballet, and yoga through which major muscle groups are worked interdependently and in an integrated manner.

This "System" is served by a series of specially designed exercise equipment, which is built around the human body with all regards to total freedom in movement, no restriction to speed and versatility, and enhances rather than distracts from coordination, strength and flexibility.

Unlike most conventional exercise machines where linear or isolated movement patterns are performed creating uncoordinated strength, the patented GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® emphasizes multiple joint articulations without compression, thus strengthening ligaments and each attachment.

The motion patterns are natural, turbulence free and pure with no interruption, creating a bridge between contraction and extension through the rotating movement of the joints, resulting in a balanced support system for the skeleton.

The exercises are performed through spherical awareness and circularity of movement, enabling the user to perform under permanent guidance, variable controlled resistance, and real sports simulation with no limitation to speed and impact.

Through uniform and permanent resistance meaning through all the changes of directions and as well within the pivot axis, the concentric and eccentric forces exerted by the involved muscle groups are maximized and evenly distributed between agonist and antagonist (muscle groups).

Each exercise is synchronized with a corresponding breathing pattern and is performed with either a rhythm or melodic rhythmical expression, creating a gentle or vigorous cardiovascular-aerobic stimulation, depending on the intensity and speed of the execution.

Special attention is paid to increase the functional capacity of the spine, resulting in a superior and well-proportioned body, which is significantly less prone to injuries. It also reduces long term accumulation of micro trauma the physique obtains, and extraordinary flexibility and essential strength, culminating in an organic rejuvenation, increased vitality and vigor.

Also in contrast to exercises that are performed under water, where it is very difficult to regulate the exactness of the movement pattern and the correctness of the position, the GYROTONIC® exercises are performed with maximum adjustability to the range of motion and controllability of the positioning. Juliu Horvath's personal struggle with chronic pain and injuries led to the development of the Juliu Horvath Method™. An important component of this methodology is GYROKINESIS® - It incorporates many key principles from yoga, dance, gymnastics and tai-chi.

The first level of GYROKINESIS®, the Essentials of BODY KINETICS™ (Level 1), is the core of Horvath's methodology. The system works the entire body through seven natural elements of spinal movement: forward, backward, left side, right side, left twist, right twist and circular, as well as all other joint articulation.

This methodology systematically and gently works the joints and muscles through rhythmic and undulating exercises. Movement stimulates the body's internal organs and different corresponding breathing patterns are integrated.

Fluidity is the key. Postures are not held for long periods of time. Instead, postures are smoothly and harmoniously connected through the use of breath, making exercises appear and feel more like a dance than traditional yoga.

The beginner classes start with self-massage and simple breathing patterns to awaken the body. The next focus is on the spine and pelvis. Seated on low stools, the class mobilizes the spine through a series of arching, curling, bending, twisting and spiraling movements. These same movement patterns are expanded to release the hip, knee, hamstring, quadriceps and so on, in all possible directions: front, back, twisting and turning. The corresponding breathing patterns in every movement stimulate the nervous system, open up the energy pathways and oxygenate the blood. The more advanced classes add endurance training to bodies prepared for more strenuous activities. The classes encompass not only sitting but also laying and standing positions.
